Armstrong County Community Awareness Day

October 19, 2009
Community Awareness Day is a "community celebration of prevention" focusing on the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, including tobacco, child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse. This year one of our goals is primary prevention, which means that we will work toward respectful behaviors that will encourage us to live lives free from violence, respecting each other, and ourselves.

RecoveryMonth.gov

The Recovery Month Web site aims to promote the societal benefits of alcohol and drug use disorder treatment, laud the contributions of treatment providers, and promote the message that recovery from alcohol and drug disorders in all its forms is possible.

2009 Recovery Month Logo What is Recovery Month?

Recovery Month is an annual observance that takes place during the month of September.

The Recovery Month observance highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible. The observance also encourages citizens to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective substance abuse treatment for those in need. Each year a new theme, or emphasis, is selected for the observance.

Recovery Month provides a platform to celebrate people in recovery and those who serve them. Each September, thousands of treatment programs around the country celebrate their successes and share them with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues in an effort to educate the public about treatment, how it works, for whom, and why. Substance abuse treatment providers have made significant accomplishments, having transformed the lives of untold thousands of Americans. These successes often go unnoticed by the broader population; therefore, Recovery Month provides a vehicle to celebrate these successes.

Recovery Month also serves to educate the public on substance abuse as a national health crisis, that addiction is a treatable disease, and that recovery is possible. Recovery Month highlights the benefits of treatment for not only the affected individual, but for their family, friends, workplace, and society as a whole. Educating the public reduces the stigma associated with addiction and treatment. Accurate knowledge of the disease helps people to understand the importance of supporting treatment programs, those who work within the treatment field, and those in need of treatment.

Family Education Support Group

Held every Tuesday at ARC Manor
7:30 PM -9:00 PM

Been at your wits end about how to help a friend or family member with a substance abuse problem? Not sure how to help or what to do? The public is welcome to participate in the Family Education Support Group which meets every Tuesday at ARC Manor from 7:30pm-9:00pm. This is a free service and sponsored by the Armstrong-Indiana Drug and Alcohol Commission. A large percentage of families do not understand the process of addiction and recovery. The most effective way for family members and loved ones to be responsive and be supportive of their loved one is to develop a strong understanding of the disease and recovery processes. This includes remaining aware of potential triggers, avoiding enabling behavior with the chemically dependent person, understanding that recovery is a process (not an event), understanding the consequences that addiction has had on their own lives, and the importance of self-care. For more information please call 724-548-7607 or 1-800-323-1333 or contact us. No pre-registration is required!

The Advocacy Group (TAG)

Recovery from Drug and Alcohol Addiction is a solution for many. Fostering recovery in Armstrong County is a solution for many community concerns.

The Advocacy Group (TAG) is your opportunity to help change the stigma around the disease of addiction. We aim to educate families and the community about addiction, successful treatment strategies and recovery. TAG is an advocate for the importance of treatment funding to our elected officials, and works to advocate for safe and sober housing for those in recovery. We celebrate recovery by coordinating and hosting sober activities throughout the year. Join us the first Thursday of the month at 113 Market St, Kittanning, PA and become part of the TAG Team.
